Woolworths supports PICAL

Phillip Island Community and Learning Centre (PICAL) recently welcomed members of the Woolworths team in Cowes to its Emergency Food Relief Pantry.
The visit was an opportunity for PICAL to recognise Woolworths for their ongoing support in the fight against local food insecurity.
Each week Woolworths Cowes donates approximately 120 kilograms of food to PICAL’s pantry.
The food is collected, sorted and distributed by a team of 25 volunteers who manage and run the pantry’s overall operation.
Dependant on the generosity of the local community – the pantry is delivered 100 per cent by volunteers. In addition, over 60 per cent of all pantry supplies are donated by individuals and businesses like Woolworths.
Vital in addressing food insecurity on Phillip Island, each month, the pantry serves more than 340 local families in need of emergency food relief.
During the visit, Woolworths representatives discussed how important redirecting excess food is for the community. A recent donation included two boxes of ham, a big boost to PICAL’s Christmas Hamper Appeal.
“We’re grateful for the food our local Woolworths provide us. It is always great to come together with those who support us – to introduce them to the volunteers who make our work possible and show them directly how together we’re making a difference,” said David Rooks, Centre Manager PICAL.
“It really is community supporting community and that’s what we're all about here at PICAL.”
Dirk Churchill, Store Manager Woolworths Cowes, said the support provided to PICAL is part of Woolworths’ broader commitment to hunger relief and sustainability.
“Reducing food waste is a priority – the aim is to keep good food out of landfill and it’s great to see here today how much of a difference this food makes to local families who are doing it tough,” Dirk said.
PICAL’s Emergency Food Relief Pantry is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm.
Located at 16 Warley Avenue, Cowes, the pantry offers support to anyone experiencing food insecurity.
