"It's a hard race to win, physically and mentally. You are out there for four to six hours, it's a long distance." Will-Jan packed four energy bars, two gels, four packets of lollies and three litres of water for the event. "It's hard to eat and drink while sailing," he added.

"This event first started in 1997 with only 10 yachts and now there are 40, across women's, men's and mixed divisions," Jordan told the crowd, adding the government was "so proud to support this national event through our Significant Sporting Events Program".

He didn't score a win this year, but Ant Richards won the race three out of the past four years, sailing a 4.9 metre Taipan in division two. This year the Westernport Yacht Club member was in the largest division, a 5.7 metre catamaran. "What is the secret to winning?" Ant said, "enjoying yourself and mind over matter. "You have to keep pushing."
