The community came out last month to thank and recognise the contributions of local SES, and CFA volunteers.

The Big BBQ Thank You at the Grantville Recreation Reserve was conceived as a way for the community to celebrate the incredible work of local emergency services volunteers.

Local resident Mandy Chancellor, originally conceived of a day to acknowledge volunteers, which was taken up by the Grantville Recreation Reserve Committee.

Organisers said the weather was kind and the sun shone for most of the day.
"Members of the public mixed with our Emergency Services Volunteers and shared insights and watched the volunteers exhibit their skills," a committee spokesperson said.

"It was a day the volunteers got to see the community's appreciation for all the work they do, all the hours they dedicate to both training and turning out to emergencies."

The much-anticipated Tug of War between Captain Koala (CFA) and Paddy Platypus (SES) saw Captain Koala grab the win after three very close challenges.

The community was then treated to an exhibition of SES road rescue skills, with Wonthaggi SES Unit leading the exercise.

Many individuals and groups in the community donated their time and services to make sure the emergency services volunteers enjoyed the day.

These include Jordan Crugnale MP, The Grantville Reserve Management Committee, Carolyn Bee, Trish Hart, Sage Kelly and 3 Chords and the Truth (live music), Bass Valley Lions Club, Zumba with Janet Hayes and Great Scott the Magician.

"All together including thank you posters from Newhaven, Bass Valley and San Remo Primary schools, the day was a great success."
