A busy start to the season
Ollie Hibbert is a picture of concentration as he faces the ball at a practice session last week.

It’s been a busy start for the Phillip Island Cricket Club this year, with record numbers of juniors turning out as restrictions ease, and four senior sides.

All ages are catered for starting with boys and girls at Blasters, and then leading on to U12, U14, and U16 years teams, through to a Transition Squad; Senior A, B, C1 and C2 sides, and currently there are Girl’s and Women’s teams emerging, with tryout days planned as soon as restrictions allow.

Cricket is introduced to the youngest players in the Blasters sessions, which is an interactive program for players aged from four to 10, where the emphasis is on learning skills and having lots of fun.

The kids then graduate to district competition level with three junior teams.

As Covid restrictions begin to ease, it is planned to extend current training sessions with two practice sessions per week now planned for each junior team.

More about that soon.

Mick Cleary is the young Blasters co-ordinator, helped by Rebecca Overeem, Tony Hornsby and Scott Boyack.

They play at the Cowes ground on Thursdays from 4pm to 5pm until December 17 and will take a school holiday break, resuming on February 4.

The Under 12 team is in the capable hands of Luke Marshall, Tarryn Allan and Clare Bailey.

Practice is on Mondays from 4.15pm to 5.30 pm, and games commence this Friday (November 13).

Play is competitive, but scores are not recorded for this age group.

The Under 14 team sees Dave Fusinato and Dan McCausland in charge.

Practice is on Tuesday nights from 4.15pm to 5.30pm and competitive district matches started last Saturday.

Dave Womersley is at the helm for Under 16 players, with practice on Wednesday nights from 4.30pm to 6pm.

Competitive matches commenced last Saturday.

Under 20 transition players are under Steve McIntyre and practice is on Wednesday nights from 4.30pm to 6pm.

The A Grade Squad and Senior teams will practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Matches commenced last Saturday.
