A regular contributor to the Advertiser’s website with his Burnsie The Rhyll Gardener column, Ian Burns has hit the tomato jackpot this year.

Ian has been growing tomatoes at his Rhyll property for the past eight or nine years, but this year he set himself a big challenge.

Really big.

He set out to grow “the biggest tomato in town” and planted a range of “giant” varieties, hoping to produce a 500g specimen.

While most of the bushes produced large tomatoes, around 250-350g, it was the Croatian Giant that really delivered.

The bush has produced two enormous tomatoes, one weighing in at 925g, while the other tipped the scales at 720g.

Burnsie is thrilled with the results, as well as his other columns on cucumbers and other gardening tips.
