Celebrating 150 years of Cowes Primary School at the weekend’s fete are Shannon and Luca.

Crowds gathered early to enjoy the Cowes Primary School fete on the weekend, before the temperatures soared.

Principal Rod McKenzie said there were big numbers through the gates early, in an effort to beat the heat.

The fete is part of the school’s 150 Year celebrations being held throughout the year.

The Phillip Island and District Historical Society held an exhibition at the school as part of the fete, chronicling 150 years of school life.

Visitors were greeted by a treasure trove of artifacts that brought the rich history of the school vividly to life.

Among the highlights of the exhibition were the original school bell, its resonance echoing through the decades – which in its day, could be heard as far away as Rhyll.

Alongside it were the preserved workbooks and school readers dating back over a century, offering a glimpse into the academic pursuits of students long past. These artifacts served as telling reminders of the school's enduring legacy and its impact on the lives of countless individuals over the past 150 years.

Doug Waugh, President of the Society said: “One of the most heart-warming aspects of the exhibition was witnessing the reactions of the school children themselves.

“As they gazed upon old black and white photographs showing their ancestors in attire from bygone eras, laughter filled the air.

“These images served as a bridge connecting the present generation with the past, fostering a sense of connection and appreciation for their shared history.”

Doug said the society was immensely satisfied with the success of the exhibition, noting its importance in preserving and celebrating the heritage of the local community.

He said the group hoped to stage more such exhibitions, providing opportunities for members of the community to delve deeper into the Society's extensive collection of artifacts.

“Through these exhibitions, the past is brought to life, enriching the present and inspiring future generations to cherish and learn from the lessons of history.”

The Phillip Island & District Historical Society’s Museum is located at Berninneit and opened Monday to Saturday from 10am.
