A unique insight into Nazi Germany

The Phillip Island Movie Club (PIMC) presents "Amrum" on Wednesday October 28 at 7.30pm at Berninneit.
The 2025 film is a German story based on true events, directed by Fatih Akin and co-written with German filmmaker Hark Bohm.
Rather than giving us another conventional wartime story, "Amrum" takes us to the spring of 1945, when Nazi Germany is collapsing.
The war is almost over, but on this remote island the consequences of years of Nazi rule are only beginning to emerge.
At the centre is twelve-year-old Nanning, who has grown up accepting the world around him without really understanding its politics.
His mother is a committed Nazi supporter, his father is away at war, and the family's beliefs have shaped the way Nanning sees the world.
When news arrives that Hitler is dead and Germany has lost the war, the foundations of his family and his understanding of right and wrong begin to shift.
"It is interesting to consider "Amrum" in the context of this year's German Film Festival, where many of the films explored different periods of German life - before Hitler, during the Nazi era, in the divided Germany that followed the war, and after the fall of the Berlin Wall," said club secretary Margaret Byrne.
"Although these films cover very different periods and stories, there seems to be a common thread running through them: Germany's continuing attempt to understand itself.
"Don't be offput by the political nature of the film's intention; seen through a child's eyes it is a quiet, sensitive drama about the after effects of one of history's most tumultuous events."
The film begins at 7.30pm sharp, runs for 93 mins and is rated M.
It is a private event and you must present your PIMC membership ticket and your Trybooking receipt to enter.
Please be considerate and cancel your ticket through Berninneit if you find you are unable to attend. In addition, Berninneit are charged for you if you do not cancel.
