An historical challenge at lunch
Members of the Phillip Island and District Historical Society enjoyed an entertaining lunch at the RSL
Members of the Phillip Island and District Historical Society enjoyed an entertaining lunch at the RSL on March 26, with a special presentation by Ron Nicholson.
Ron's talk about the San Remo Channel Challenge had members enthralled.
"Ron is a governor at the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club, and he shared some amazing stories with us about the history of the club and the Channel Challenge which recently celebrated its 40th Anniversary," said secretary, Marian Wallace.
"I think we were all stunned to learn the amount of scientific research that is involved in each race.
"Ron was a very engaging speaker and we were delighted to have him as our guest," she said.
Adding to the Channel Challenge experience, Mike Cleeland entertained the diners with a poem he wrote about a Channel Challenge competitor who disguised himself as a shark one year.
The next meeting of the Historical Society will be the AGM in August.
