Annual Gippsland Wine Show attracting strong entries

Phillip Island Winery will host the Gippsland Wine Show award ceremony on December 8.

Wineries across Gippsland will be showcasing their wines in the annual 2021 Westpac Gippsland Wine Show with judging to take place later this month in Bass Coast.

“The committee is delighted to be able to hold this event, finishing the year with an in-person celebration for our producers, sponsors and supporters,” said Wine Gippsland Chair, Alistair Hicks.

The 2021 Westpac Gippsland Wine Show will be judged on Monday, November 29 at the new Cape Paterson Surf Lifesaving Club.

The later date has allowed the Wine Gippsland committee time to work within the Covid roadmap and plan an in-person awards ceremony and dinner, one of the few to continue in Victoria this year.

“We’re honoured that Westpac has chosen to be our lead sponsor for the event and will be naming Best Wine of Show. We’re pleased to have attracted strong entries,” Mr Hicks said.

The Awards Ceremony and Exhibitor Tasting will be held at the Phillip Island Winery on Wednesday, December 8, with a limited number of tickets to be opened for online booking soon.

Mr Hicks said that the profile of Gippsland wine producers and winemakers has expanded greatly in recent years, with the wine show playing an important role.

“It gives our producers and winemakers the opportunity to gain feedback from highly respected judges, who base their marks on national standards, not just the best within Gippsland.”

For the third consecutive year, the chief judge will be Yarra Yering winemaker and general manager, Sarah Crowe.

Sarah is a former Halliday Winemaker of the Year (2017), and the recipient of an unprecedented four top awards this year: Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine’s Winemaker of the Year (2021), The Real Review Winery of the Year (2021), Halliday Winery of the Year (2022) and Halliday Wine of the Year (2022).

“The awards ceremony itself is also an opportunity for wineries to celebrate with community leaders, sponsors, trade and local wine enthusiasts and thank them for their support,” he said.
