Another successful Nippers season
“Our Nippers and SRCs are the next generation of life savers, who’ll be equipped with the skills and knowledge to keep us safe whilst we enjoy our magnificent coastal environment.” Planning for next summer’s Nippers program is already underway, and the club expects it to be bigger than ever."
Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club has been praised for successfully staging its hugely popular Nippers program again this season despite the Covid restrictions.
From December 28 to January 5, the modified program was run at both Smiths Beach and Cleeland Bight Beach in line with Covid-Safe guidelines set by Life Saving Victoria.
“Although we had to cap participation numbers this year, we were able to offer a safe and enjoyable program to almost 300 children aged 6 to 13 years, which is a huge feat,” Director of Junior Development Charles Tuchtan said .“We could not have done this without the help of around 100 volunteers who assisted both in and out of the water.”
In addition to delivering Nippers in a COVID-19 environment, Charles explained the club had another aim this season, and that was to give back to the community.
“Our local community has supported us for many years through donations and sponsorship, and this season we wanted to help those local businesses that have done so much for us in the past.
“Rather than asking them to help us this year, we tried to help them by purchasing vouchers that we used as raffle prizes. It worked well and was a real win-win!”
Coinciding with Nippers, the club also ran a Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) course at Woolamai Beach for those who completed Nippers last year.
“I’m pleased to advise this year’s SRC students passed all of their assessments, which means they can now become patrolling members of the club,” said Charles.
“Our Nippers and SRCs are the next generation of life savers, who’ll be equipped with the skills and knowledge to keep us safe whilst we enjoy our magnificent coastal environment.”
