Change to cricket season plans
The preliminary practice arrangements for practice at the Cowes ground are now as follows:
The ever-present COVID-related restrictions has forced the Phillip Island and District Cricket Club to amend plans for the start of the season.
With the comprehensive precautions that are required, the number of training sessions per week for juniors has been adapted, meaning the training schedule announced last week has now been modified.
And these will naturally change again, as new restrictions are applied to circumstances in the region and across the state.
The preliminary practice arrangements for practice at the Cowes ground are now as follows:
Blasters – Thursday 4-5pm, commence Thursday, October 22.
U12 – Monday 4-5.15pm, commence Monday, October 12.
U14 – Tuesday 4-5.30pm, commenced Tuesday, October 6.
U16 – Wednesday 4.30-6pm, commence Wednesday, October 7.
PIDCC Junior Co-Coordinator, Dave Womersley, announced the amended schedule at the club zoom meeting with parents on Monday, October 5.
Players are eager to get to practice after enduring the restrictions through the winter.
One of the disappointments of revised practice plan is that the extremely popular Blasters program has had to be deferred and will now commence in two-week’s time, on Thursday, October 22 at 4pm at Cowes ground.
Promotional pamphlets are being distributed to schools in the area and registration for Blasters and the PIDCC Junior Cricket squads are open for boys and girls at Play Cricket to PIDCC at https://www.playcricket.com.au/ or direct to the club at https://www.playcricket.com.au/club-finder/club-details?Id=1274
The club is awaiting the release of the Leongatha District Cricket Association 2020-21 season schedule of matches.
It is anticipated junior competition will begin in late October.
This season, PIDCC has planned an U20 Development Training Group, under the guidance of B-Grade captain, Steve McIntyre.
This is aimed at providing a smooth transition for talented junior players into the senior ranks.
In addition, plans are being refined to form a specialist Spin Bowlers Squad, under the guidance of leading spinners, Charith Keerthisinghe and Clint Wilson.
As well as developing individual talent, this squad will aim to enable club teams to adopt varied tactics.
This provides an opportunity for players to learn more about the Asian style of playing cricket from Charith, who was a member of the national Spin Bowling Squad in Sri Lanka.
This season, we may see the PIDCC teams spinning their way to the top of the competition.
