Michelle Messina, Customer Service Manager at Coles in Cowes, and Steve Munro, Lions Club member, inspect pre-loved children’s books donated at Coles Supermarket in Cowes.
Since early January 2023, Coles Supermarket in Cowes and the Lions Club of Phillip Island have worked together to collect used kids books and give them a new life.
Generous Phillip Islanders have so far donated about a hundred kilograms of books to this project.
The books collected from Coles in Cowes are taken to a central collection point run by the Lions Reading Action Project. There they are sorted, cleaned and packed. Books that are too damaged or have simply been loved too much are sent to the paper recyclers.
The sorted and cleaned books are made available wherever the need to promote kids’ reading skills and enjoyment is greatest.
Recently, most of the books have been going to areas hardest hit by the recent Australian floods. Many have been sent to Lismore to replace flood damaged books there.
Look for the big blue bin with the 123Read2Me label at Coles Supermarket in Cowes to donate those books that kids and grandkids have outgrown.
The Lions Reading Action Program will ensure donated books get to areas of need, whether that be flooded regions or to disadvantaged kids elsewhere who may be helped with free books.
Coles and the Lions Club thank all the good people of Phillip Island who have already donated books to this cause.
This Reading Action Program is one of the many Community Service programs run by the Lions Club of Phillip Island.
New volunteers are always welcome to join the friendly Lions team and help them serve the community.
