The president of the Lions Club of Phillip Island has reassured the community that the local branch is still operating.
Steve Munro said the report in the Advertiser on May 24 on the closure of the San Remo/Newhaven group had confused some community members.
“The Lions Club of Phillip Island is saddened to learn that our sister club on the Island, the San Remo/Newhaven Lions Club, has decided to wind up its operations,” he said.
“While we are also suffering a relative decline in recruiting new members, we will continue to add to the estimated millions of dollars the club has raised for charities and community services over the last half-century.”
The weekend used furniture, hardware and bric-a-brac market in Dunsmore Road, known to a generation of islanders as "Steptoe’s Emporium”, remains open.
Residents can still find treasures for their home among the pre-loved furniture and other items at the depot.
“Proceeds from the weekend market go towards funding the Lions’ community service projects on the island,” Steve said.
“These have included donating money to Cowes Primary School for the before-school breakfast program and for a number of school starter kits.
“Lions have also helped fund community meals provided by St John’s and St Philip’s.
“Additionally, the Lions Club of Phillip Island has donated thousands of dollars this year to flood victims nationally, to the Good Friday Appeal, to research efforts to fight childhood cancer and the scourge of MS, and to help youth off the streets.
“These donations to local community services and to national charities will continue.”
Opening hours for Steptoe’s Emporium are Saturday 9.30am-12.30pm, and Sunday 9.30am-12pm.
