Bass Coast Shire Council is calling for applicants for its 2023 traineeship program.

Six young Bass Coast residents will have the opportunity to undertake combined paid education and work experience across departments from Arts and Culture to Tourism and Business Development.

With support from Westvic, a group training authority that specialises in apprenticeships and traineeships, the Bass Coast Shire Council traineeship offers six successful applicants the chance to build their skills and experience over a full time, 12-month period, to support their future career goals.

Previous participants have spoken enthusiastically about the opportunities provided by the traineeship.

Lauren Sullivan was a People and Culture Trainee in 2022 and it was her first job in an office environment. “I’ve been given the opportunity to challenge myself and push myself outside of my comfort zone,” she said.

Rhett Wilson worked in the depot as an Infrastructure Maintenance Trainee and said the council offered a good workplace with flexible conditions.

“The work culture here in the depot, is very easy going. Everyone is easy to communicate with and actually care about your opinion.”

For Danielle Focas, working in Customer and Visitor Experience, the traineeship was a chance to gain knowledge and understand of government procedures.

“The traineeship allows for a deeper way of thinking, team building skills and developing decision making skills.”.

For 2023 Council offers available traineeships in Arts and Culture, Customer and Visitor Experience, Finance, IT, People and Culture, plus Tourism and Business Development.

Successful candidates will be enrolled in a Certificate III course in a range of subjects including business administration, live production and technical services, hospitality or tourism.

Council offers trainees the same flexible working benefits enjoyed by staff, plus access to apply for internal vacancies. It hopes trainees secure permanent employment with the council after their course.

“Building a positive future and creating hope is more important to Bass Coast Shire Council than ever before,” said a Council spokesperson.

“Along with our commitments to gender equity and dedication to combating climate change, providing career prospects and a sense of belonging to our community is high on our agenda.

“For over 20 years, Bass Coast Shire Council has successfully offered traineeships to people within our region, providing pathways into long term employment in local government and beyond.

“In 2023 Council extends its training opportunities with VCAL and school-based traineeships.

“If you are the next shining star of Bass Coast Shire Council, apply for a traineeship to make 2023 your year!”

Applications close January 11 for the Arts and Culture role, then January 18 for all other programs.
