McDonald’s proposed development in Cowes will be voted on by Bass Coast Shire councillors on Wednesday (October 21), at a meeting to be held in Cowes, at Berninneit (starting 1pm).

The council agenda for the October meeting, released this evening, lists the planning permit as an agenda item, with council planners recommending councillors vote to grant McDonald’s a permit.

The McDonald’s application on the council’s websites states as of October 15 council had received 1543 objections and 32 support submissions, which is a record-breaking number for a Phillip Island development.

“Our team is currently processing submissions lodged on or before September 18, 2026,” the website states.

The permit is for a convenience restaurant at 157 Thompson Avenue (zoned commercial) and 190-194 Settlement Road (zoned residential), as well as removal of native vegetation in a vegetation protection overlay.

As reported, Phillip Islanders came out in force to oppose the proposed McDonald’s in Cowes, with speakers at a submitters’ hearing earlier this month passionately urging councillors to reject the development.

At the hearing, two town planners and a solicitor cast doubt on the legality of McDonald’s planning permit application.

More details next week.
