Cows creates careers
The Cows Create Careers program provides a practical and insightful introduction to the Australian dairy industry.
The Cows Create Careers program provides a practical and insightful introduction to the Australian dairy industry for Newhaven College's Year 9 students.
This hands-on educational program involves over 200 schools and around 5000 students across Australia. Newhaven College's Year 9 Environmental Centre provides for two calves to be housed on campus, at 'Moohaven'.
In partnership with MaxCare, Cows Create Careers invites schools across Australia to create an advertisement for the dairy industry. Students study advertising techniques and create promotions for MaxCare. Last year, an advertisement created by two Newhaven students won the $1000 prize.
"Every year our Year 9 students are given the opportunity to nurture two calves as part of our community program," said Elizabeth Hall, Year 9 teacher and program coordinator.
"The experience pairs beautifully with the holistic Year 9 immersive program focusing on our environment and rural location."
Cows Create Careers, Program Manager, Deanne Kennedy comments "This program educates students on all the different career opportunities available to them in the dairy industry, from working directly with the cows to sales, marketing and advertising".
"It's important to introduce this program into schools at a time when students are thinking about their future."
The highlight for the students is the opportunity to nurture and care for the two calves over a few weeks. Building a relationship with the calves and watching them flourish is an extraordinary experience.
