Phillip Island District Cricket Club is confident of hosting a safe and successful summer and is getting ready to launch the 2020-21 season.
A Covid-safe program has been developed which will help in mitigating any transmission of COVID-19.
Activities have been developed to assist boys and girls to hone their skills and learn the finer points of the game, in a fun-filled, safe environment.
Central to this will be the use of modified equipment including soft balls, aimed at fast tracking the capacities required to successfully engage in a game that can develop into a challenging high-speed ball sport.
PIDCC is delighted to announce the return of Club Coach, Charith Keerthisinghe for the 2020-21 season after another strong 2019-20 season.
Charith’s contribution to the development of junior cricket at the club has been outstanding.
Charith played a pivotal role in the Leongatha District Cricket Association representative team winning its division at the Victorian Country
Week Carnival in early 2020, prior to COVID-19.
As Club Coach, he is planning to build on his successes in past seasons and to help to mould the PIDCC program.
Very shortly, arrangements will be announced on the practice schedules for boys and girls to learn more about cricket and get ready for the start of competition.
The club will offer cricket at the following age levels, as part of the national playing pathway:
Junior Blasters (age 5-7 years).
Master Blasters (age 7-10 years).
Under 12 years.
Under 14 years.
Under 16 years.
The junior program connects very closely with the four Senior PIDCC teams that play in LDCA competition.
For most players, learning the game and enjoying the experience that cricket offers is the prime objective.
However, talented juniors can be selected in the Leongatha DCA talent squads that connect with the Victorian Bushrangers pathway, and on to the national youth programs for male and female players. The Country Week Carnival, where Charith Keerthisinghe has excelled, offers another opportunity at the representative level.
Ultimately, players who work their way through the pathway can make their way to the phenomenally successful Australian Men’s and Women’s International programs.
In this way, cricket aims to cater for all interest levels and assist players to explore their ability in this truly international sport.
