Newhaven College is proud to announce their first visiting artist in the school’s new Performing Arts Wing black box theatre.
Tenzin Choegyal is performing on Tuesday November 22 at 6pm. Several Newhaven College students will have the honour of performing with Tenzin as well. Tickets are $20 per person.
One of the world's finest Tibetan musicians, Tenzin Choegyal is a master of traditional Tibetan instruments but is best known for his extraordinary vocal ability. Tenzin has performed at major festivals across Australia and internationally, including at New York’s Carnegie Hall.
He plays the lingbu (bamboo flute) and dranyen (three-stringed Tibetan lute) but is best known for his stunning vocal range and performance of droklu, the nomadic music of his parents.
Tenzin has performed with Tibetan monks in exile, whom he supports financially through his tours, as well as the Tibetan Children's Villages, the school for Tibetan refugee children which he attended as a child.
His nine albums include collaborations with Philip Glass (The Last Dalai Lama?) and 2021 Grammy-nominated Songs from the Bardo with Laurie Anderson - a moving interpretation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. His latest album, Yeshi Dolma, is the result of a 10-year collaboration with Camerata, Brisbane’s chamber orchestra.
Through songs, anecdotes, and warm explanations, Tenzin takes audiences on a musical journey that transcends cultural boundaries and brings the essence of Tibetan tradition into a very contemporary setting, even inviting them to join in lively singalongs and meditative mantras.
Tenzin’s obvious joyfulness is infectious and his message is uplifting.
If you have never seen Tenzin before, be sure to check him out on YouTube.
