Have you ever wanted to take a peek into the past? Well, now's your chance.

The Phillip Island and District Historical Society in conjunction with the Bass Coast Branch of the National Trust have brought back the Pioneer Palaces Tour of Rhyll on April 29, to celebrate the 2023 Australian Heritage Festival, with the theme Shared Stories.

The Pioneer Palaces tour visits each of the nine remaining historic cottages in Rhyll dating back to the 1870s. The bus tour, led by local historians, will begin at the historic Rhyll Mechanics Hall, in the beautiful seaside hamlet and then proceed by mini coach visiting each of these heritage homes. 

Participants will learn about the lives of original inhabitants of these remaining nine pioneers’ cottages, and the roles they have played in shaping the Island’s history. 

Two tours will be offered – one in the morning and one in the afternoon, both on Saturday April 29. There are only 20 places available on each session.

Doug Waugh, President of the Society said, “We sold out so quickly last time, and had a number of disappointed people – that we decided to not only increase the tour from one coach trip to two, but also broaden the offering with a wonderful morning or afternoon tea at one of the cottages, so that attendees really get to experience the delights of these cottages.”

Doug also said how much he appreciated the support of the owners of the cottages and thanked them for their willingness to share their homes.
