Bass Coast Shire Council is hosting the inaugural Regional Circular Economy Summit in Cowes on Thursday June 5 - World Environment Day - bringing together circular economy experts, decision-makers, and practitioners from across the region and beyond.
The summit at Berninneit will feature presentations, panel discussions, and interactive workshops, offering attendees the opportunity to explore the environmental, economic, and social benefits of adopting circular economy principles.
With a focus on practical implementation, the event aims to equip leaders and organisations with the knowledge and tools needed to transition toward a more regenerative and sustainable future.
Chris Francis, Sustainability Victoria's Gippsland Regional Engagement Lead, is speaking at the event and said that attendees will gain insights into the environmental, financial, and social benefits of circular economic development.
"The summit will explore how circular economy principles can be effectively applied within organisations, how to accelerate decision-making to support circular initiatives, and how to align circular strategies with broader goals such as Net Zero and Nature Positive outcomes," said Mr Francis.
Practical case studies will showcase successful implementations, and sector-specific opportunities will be identified to support innovation and sustainability.
"The Regional Circular Economy Summit offers a unique platform for leaders, practitioners, and innovators to come together and drive real change. It's about turning circular economy theory into action - locally, regionally, and across sectors," said Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Rochelle Halstead.
The region has already witnessed the benefits of the circular economy through the Bass Coast's Circular Economy Business Accelerator Program which ran from August to December 2024.
Funded by Sustainability Victoria as part of the Circular Economy Business Innovation Centre, the program provided tailored support to 11 businesses across the council region, helping them reduce waste, regenerate resources, and strengthen long-term resilience.
San Remo Fisherman's Co-op, Wildlife Coast Cruises, Ecoliv Buildings and Phillip Island Community and Learning Centre are just four of the businesses that are now embedding circularity across their operations reducing environmental impact after taking part in the program.
