Fundraiser for Jade Squires/Summerfield
The local community is rallying to raise money for Jade Squires, a young mum facing a devastating cancer diagnosis.
Until last year, Jade and her husband Kai and two young children Emery (4) and Ayana (2) lived at Cape Woolamai, before heading off to travel Australia in their green bus Minty.
However, the young mother was recently given a terminal cancer diagnosis.
She has begun a course of chemotherapy to try and buy time to seek alternative therapies and treatments.
Jade’s family has flown to the Sunshine Coast to be with her, while friends from San Remo and the Island have planned a massive fundraiser for this weekend.
“Drag Bingo for Jade” will kick off at 7.30pm at the San Remo Hotel on Friday night (July 16), MC’d by Jimi the Kween.
Organiser Lou Curtis-Smith has been blown away by the support shown so far.
“The San Remo Hotel have been incredible,” she said.
“They’re donating the room, the bar staff and even nibbles for the guests.
“And our fabulous MC for the evening, Jimi the Kween agreed to do the event instantly.
“He too has donated his time. He doesn’t know Jade, but he has a heart and wants to make her life easier.”
Lou said Simon Sheldy from First Choice Real Estate has volunteered to auction off the many items donated by local businesses.
Auction items include artwork, gym memberships, photography vouchers, tree surgery vouchers and a health spa day retreat for four people.
Lou is hoping the community will get behind the fundraising efforts and come along on Friday night.
“It really is in hard times like these that I feel so grateful to be living in a small community such as this,” she said.
“Everybody is touched by Jade’s story.
The thought of being wrenched from your young family’s arms and stuck in hospital with cancer breathing down your neck is a horror nobody wants to imagine.
“This is their reality. If this fundraiser can buy them time and also provide a little lightness, then we have achieved our goal.”
