Wonthaggi Little Athletics Centre has received a $3000 grant to help buy new equipment.

The money comes from the latest round of the Coles Little Athletics Community Fund.

Fresh off the inspiring performances from Australia’s track and field stars at the Tokyo Olympics, the Little Athletics centre in Wonthaggi is hoping new equipment from Coles will help budding athletes fulfill their sporting potential.

Wonthaggi Little Athletics Centre President Mark Rowe said the funding will help the centre to survive and thrive through challenging times.
“Wonthaggi Little Athletics has a fresh committee with new ideas and lots of enthusiasm to improve our athletics club,” he said.
“One area we’re focusing on in particular is to generate a more carnival-like atmosphere to our Saturday morning meets and to try and make the environment for our little athletes and spectators more exciting and enjoyable.”
“The Coles grant will help us to achieve this goal with a new portable PA system, marshalling flags and new laptops to give athletes instant results and feedback.”

Coles State General Manager Claire Lauber said Coles was extremely proud of its partnership with Little Athletics Australia and its grassroots clubs and centres in Victoria.

For every kilogram of bananas sold at Coles supermarkets on National Banana Day in May, Coles donated 10 cents to the Coles Little Athletics Community Fund.

More than $343,000 in sports equipment grants were distributed to 104 Little Athletics centres across Australia in the latest round of funding, taking the total contribution of the Coles Little Athletics

Community Fund to over $2 million in just three years.

In addition Coles has donated more than 3.6 million bananas to Little Athletics centres since 2017.

This year’s grants were funded from the sale of Coles’ reusable community bags designed by Aussie kids and the sale of bananas sold at Coles’ supermarkets on National Banana Day in May.
