Phillip Island Landcare group has been actively restoring the native habitat for three years in the new Sporting Precinct at the Phillip Island Recreation Reserve.
Through funding from the 2024 AusNet Community Landcare Grants, which has seen $60,000 funding from Landcare Australia and AusNet, the group has been able to protect and enhance 10 acres of bushland on the site.
Phillip Island Landcare has delivered five community planting sessions, two workshops, an AusNet corporate volunteering day, eight school visits either planting and/or fencing and a team building planting activity with Bass Coast Shire Council.
Including the background work by the committee, total volunteer hours are estimated to be 740 hours. At a volunteer rate of $30 per hour, that's a community contribution of $22,000.
The project has had great support from other organisations including Bass Coast Shire Council who recently undertook the weeding required for the project site, with over 30 days of tackling weeds.
Bass Coast Landcare Network supported the project, including $7500 to tackle roadside weeds in the road reserve along the North South border.
Sue Doyle, President of Phillip Island Landcare Group, said she is "delighted with the partnerships that have supported this endeavour, with special thanks going to Landcare Australia and AusNet for their seed funding that initiated the overall project".
The group invites the community along to an information session in November to see the results of their work and learn more about its local fauna and flora.
Project Coordinator, David Rooks, said "we're excited to share with the community the work we've completed so far and the revegetation growth we can expect in the coming years".
The "walk 'n talk" will take place on Saturday November 7 from 10.30am to midday at the Phillip Island Recreation Reserve - access via Ventnor Road.
