Community donations for the annual Christmas hampers are urgently needed, according to the Phillip Island Community and Learning Centre.
PICAL manager Greg Thompson said for the third year running they will be conducting their Christmas hamper campaign, which last year delivered more than 500 bags of festive fare to 165 families, 38 couples and 16 singles.
“We are seeking donations from the community of packaged non-perishable items that are still within their use-by timeframe,” Greg said.
“Items can include Christmas products such as packaged puddings, canned ham, and shortbreads, as well as other regular food staples such as pasta, UHT milk, biscuits and any toiletries. We cannot accept any damaged packaging, due to health regulations.”
Greg said PICAL normally co-ordinates the annual Christmas day lunch at St Philips Anglican Church, which again would not be occurring this year.
“Unfortunately last year, Covid restrictions and lockdowns prevented this Christmas lunch.
“This year, we were uncertain when the lockdowns were going to be lifted and what type of Covid restrictions would be in place at Christmas, so we didn’t have enough time to organise.”
He said donated items should be brought to the PICAL reception at 56-58 Church Street, Cowes; alternatively donated items can be left in trolleys at the front of Cowes Coles and Woolworth supermarkets.
PICAL is also accepting cash donations to purchase items in short supply (contact reception@pical.org.au or phone 5952 1131).
Donations will be accepted until Friday December 17.
Anyone wanting to receive a hamper can register until December 13 at PICAL reception, the Phil Dixon Food Relief Pantry and in the Women Connect office, providing their contact details, and number of family members. Registrations will not be taken via phone or email.
Registered recipients can collect hampers from December 15 to Christmas Eve during PICAL opening hours 9am-2pm. Delivery to households may be available upon request, but must be approved by PICAL.
