Frente bring Marvin to Archies Creek
2 min read

Frente play Archies Creek on February 11, promising a "shared live experience that almost always involves awkward dancing (that's us, not you) and a monstrous sing-a-long".

Frente burst onto the Australia music scene in the 1990s charming fans with their "indie folk pop" at a time when grunge was dominating the music scene.

After several successful Eps (Ordinary Angels went to No. 3 on the singles charts) they released their debut album "Marvin The Album".

Both Marvin and its ubiquitous single "Accidently Kelly Street" were Top 5 hits.

After releasing a second album they disbanded in 1998, but reunited for a nation-wide tour in 2023 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Marvin.

Now Marvin is coming to Archies Creek and singer Angie Hart said she's excited to be visiting again.

"I've had the experience of Archies, but the whole band hasn't.

"We've been doing a few duo and trio things at the moment, so this is a lovely thing to do together," she said.

Alongside her musical partner Simon Austin, this iteration of Frente includes Ben Wiesner on drums, Tamara Murphy on bass and Sophie Koh on keys.

Angie describes her band mates as "top notch players" and says the team is "gig fit" after last year's tour.

Going back on the road to promote the album - which was a platinum selling record when it was released in 1992 - has been a beautiful surprise she said.

"The shows have been like a big warm hug.

"There's been a great turn out and great sharing," she said.

"We're hearing everyone's stories about what the band means to them, and what the songs meant at times in their lives.

"People are so generous with their stories and that is the best part of the shows."

She said it's also been heartening to meet a new generation of fans, who grew up listening to Frente's music.

Fans coming to Archies Creek can expect to hear the songs from Marvin, some rarities and B-sides, and some "beloved songs" from Shape, the band's second album.

"There's also some favourite sing-a-long songs that we did not write," Angie said.

"And there'll be ridiculous banter, as we've never got any better at that."

While the audience gets to reunite with the songs they grew up, or grew old with, Angie said there's a similar reunion onstage.

"Simon and I have the same chemistry as ever," she said.

"We were living in each other's pockets for so long. But now, we've both had lives and we've brought our lives back to each other.

"I'm enjoying being a woman in a band more than I ever have.

"I feel much more respected for my role in Frente these days. There's a lot less focus on what I look like and more about what I am doing in the band.

"The respect has always been there with Simon, and the audience hasn't changed, but now with critics I hear a difference.

"The way they are talking about Frente retrospectively is wonderful."

Frente play Archies Creek on Sunday February 11. Doors open at 2.30pm, show starts 3pm.
