Community planting session

Have you been wondering what has been happening at the new Phillip Island Recreation Reserve in Cowes? Before other council-initiated works begin, the Phillip Island Landcare group has been busy protecting and restoring some of the native vegetation. You can find out more and get involved in this new project by coming along to the next Community Planting Day on Saturday August 16.

In May 2024, Phillip Island Landcare Group (PILG) were advised of their successful grant application to the AusNet Community Landcare Grants program, a partnership between AusNet and Landcare Australia.

The group will receive $60,000 in funding over three years to promote community revegetation. The project site is owned by the Bass Coast Shire Council and is located in the southeast corner of the Phillip Island Recreation Reserve site. The key objective of the project is the protection and enhancement of endangered remnant vegetation.

This year, the group has installed wallaby fencing around the 10 acre project site, cleared 300sqm of the gorse weed, established 10 trial revegetation sites, participated in the Whale Festival offering a planting session and a chance for visitors to give back to our island, and held a further community and corporate planting day session with guest speak Gio Fitzpatrick.

The group has one more planting session to be held this year on Saturday August 16 and they would love the community to visit the site.

This is your chance to find out more and get involved in the revegetation shaping the future Phillip Island Recreational Reserve. Community plantings are a fun, social and rewarding way to help create a greener future.

They will begin from 9.30am with morning tea, followed by a 10am start and hope to plant around 1000 tube stock. Around midday, there will be a break for a free BBQ lunch.  All ages are welcome.
