Ambulance Victoria (AV) paramedics will be at Cape Woolamai on March 7, sharing critical beach health and safety information with Bass Coast community members.

The safety event, run by Bass Coast Shire Council, will help people understand how to stay safe in the water, with AV providing crucial tips on heat health, what to do in a life-threatening emergency - Call, Push, Shock - and the alternate healthcare options available to community members for non-life-threatening situations.

AV Acting Gippsland Operations Community Engagement Liaison Coordinator Jess Shepherd said even as summer ends, beach safety remains a priority.

"We typically see warm weather continue into autumn and expect many Victorians to spend the upcoming Labour Day long weekend and Easter break at the beach, so it's vital community members know how to keep themselves safe," she said.

"On hot days, it's important to be alert to the symptoms of heat stroke - recognising the signs can mean the difference between life and death.

If you or someone else is experiencing symptoms such as confusion, seizures, collapsing or loss of consciousness, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

"To reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses, stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, wear a hat and sunscreen, and avoid being outside during the hottest time of the day."

For non-life-threatening emergencies all year round, there are lots of places to get health advice and care outside of calling Triple Zero (000) and going to hospital.

The free, online Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (VVED) at www.vved.org.au allows you to speak with emergency doctors and nurses from the comfort of your own home via video call, anywhere in Victoria.
