Parliamentary inquiry into coastal inundation?

Federal Member for Monash Mary Aldred says a national framework is needed to address the growing threat of coastal inundation in Bass Coast and South Gippsland.

Warning of the environmental and economic costs as well as potential home losses, Ms Aldred said a parliamentary inquiry was needed to address this important issue.

"I called for a national framework to address coastal inundation in my maiden speech last year," Ms Aldred said.

"That's because it's a crucial issue for a number of areas in South Gippsland and Bass Coast shires, particularly Inverloch and Phillip Island."

Ms Aldred said a parliamentary inquiry would enable a nationally coordinated approach to coastal inundation, addressing environmental, economic and insurance challenges that regions across Australian currently face.

"At the moment, we have an ad hoc, patchwork quilt approach to addressing coastal inundation, despite it affecting many regional areas including communities in Monash," Ms Aldred said.

"It's something I want to ensure the Monash electorate is strongly represented on, and I will continue to call for a parliamentary inquiry as well as other more immediate steps."
