A crowd of more than 200 local readers gathered at Berninneit on Thursday November 13 for an author event with acclaimed writer and journalist Peter FitzSimons AM, presented by Myli - My Community Library's Phillip Island Library.
Interest in the free event grew quickly, and the library moved the session into the Cultural Centre's auditorium to ensure enough space for the large number of attendees.
The atmosphere was warm and enthusiastic as Peter shared stories from his early life and the influence his parents had on his love of reading and storytelling.
Throughout the morning, Peter spoke about the extensive research that underpins his many bestselling titles and offered insight into the development of his latest book, The Courageous Life of Weary Dunlop.
Audience members responded strongly to his reflections on Australian history, the writing process and the remarkable figures he has studied over the years. The session included time for audience questions, giving attendees the chance to hear more of Peter's insights and anecdotes.
The Cowes bookstore Turn the Page supported the event by offering a range of Peter's books for purchase. Many visitors took the opportunity to buy Christmas gifts, and long queues formed as readers waited to have their books personally signed both before and after the talk.
The event was brought together by the Phillip Island Library team, with support from Bass Coast Shire Council, Hachette Australia and staff from the Bass Coast Cultural Centre. Their combined efforts, along with strong community interest, resulted in a memorable celebration of reading and local connection.
"It was wonderful to see our community gather in such strong numbers for this event," said Sue Hamilton, Myli's Acting Executive Manager of Libraries.
"Bringing people together through stories is at the heart of what we do at Myli, and the enthusiasm in the room showed how deeply our community values these opportunities.
"The Phillip Island Library team worked incredibly hard to make the morning a success, and we are grateful for the support and energy everyone brought to the event."
