Relief at lockdown lifting
Liz Ward of Cape Winds in San Remo said it was a relief to be open again.

While all eyes are on Melbourne, with its extended lockdown and increased restrictions, for now the regions remain under lesser restrictions.

While some businesses have struggled with enforcing rules around mask wearing and turning away customers from Melbourne (see separate story), most were happy to be able to reopen their doors last week.

Liz Ward at Cape Winds said it was a relief to reopen, while Sue Farrell from Not Just Shoes in Cowes said it “feels great to be opened to locals … so everyone can get out and about and experience some retail therapy again”.

Carolyn Hanson at Cowes Bazaar said the lifting of restrictions was a welcome relief. “It’s not good mentally for everyone to be stuck at home,” she said.

Surinder Kaur at the San Remo Bakery summed up many business owner’s frustration with the on-again, off-again lock down situation.

“It’s obviously good to be out of lockdown – such a relief and we’re certainly happy to be open again but it’s frustrating as well. We never know when we’re going back into lockdown and we’re losing business and money. People don’t want to come back out.

“And when we are open, it’s stressful trying to recoup money lost during the lockdowns.”
