Mustang GT4 scores back-to-back wins in Australian debut

The Miedecke Motorsport Ford Mustang GT4 has blitzed the Monochrome GT4 Australia field in its Australian debut, securing pole and clean sweeping both races with a pair of victories. It was a fitting result, with the Ford Mustang 60 Years Race Phillip Island event honouring six decades of the legendary pony car.

Driven by George Miedecke and Rylan Gray, the Ford Mustang GT4 was at the pointy end of the field across the weekend as it made its Australian debut.

George Miedecke started the first race of the weekend after qualifying in fifth, but charged hard from the green flag, before handing over to Rylan Gray with the team in second position.

“Coming into this weekend we didn’t really know what was going to happen,” the veteran driver explained.

“Behind the scenes it was a lot of work. Tuesday through to Thursday the guys in the team were absolutely thrashing.

“But the minute we rolled out of pitlane the Mustang GT4 just felt right. The car felt really good and Multimatic have done a fantastic job in engineering and developing this car.

Rylan Gray joins the Miedecke Motorsports team for the 2024 GT4 championship, dovetailing driving duties alongside his rookie season of Super 2 where he races a Gen2 Mustang Supercar for Tickford Autosport.

The young driver felt immediately comfortable in the GT4 car, “I got in and the Mustang GT4 was such a fantastic car to drive straight away, so I was super happy with it”.

The back-to-back victories were secured in front of a record crowd of more than 17,000 race fans, with a large gathering of Ford Mustang enthusiasts making the pilgrimage to Phillip Island to honour the iconic pony car’s 60th birthday.

Celebrating his 40th anniversary as a Ford Dealer in 2024, Andrew Miedecke was thrilled to secure victory in front of the Blue Oval faithful.

“We looked as if we did it easy, but it wasn’t that easy,” said the Miedecke Motorsport team owner. “We had a couple niggles in the car, things that we will get sorted out.

“I think the car is equal to anything else in the field, but we just so happen to have the best two drivers.

“No doubt we may have to carry some extra weight or cop time penalties but we will punch away and I am hopeful that the rest of the year is similar to this weekend.”

The next round of the Monochrome GT4 Australia championship will take place at Shell V-Power Motorsport Park at The Bend on May 31 – June 2.
