Newhaven College is celebrating the high standard of work being produced by its visual arts students.
The school said this year’s Year 10 Art cohort is notable, with some very talented students using a variety of mediums and techniques. In particular, Elsa Osabutey’s intricate still life works stands out for its precision and the sophistication of its composition.
The College’s Visual Arts Program offers an extensive selection of subjects, including ceramics, 3D studies, 2D studies like printmaking and analogue photography in the on-site darkroom. This diverse curriculum encourages students to explore and develop their unique studio processes, blending traditional and contemporary approaches to media, materials and equipment.
Senior School Art Teacher Rebecca Power is passionate about the program.
“Through the creation of art, students can interpret the world around them, discovering new facets of themselves and expressing their individual perspectives,” she says.

“Each student maintains a visual diary that captures sources of inspiration, design sketches, photographic documentation of subject matter, and the techniques and processes associated with their chosen themes. It serves as a reflective journal, supporting the development and presentation of their final pieces.”
In addition to hands-on practice, students study a variety of artists, gaining insights into different uses of materials, techniques, ideas and meanings. This exploration helps them understand various working practices, which they can then apply to their own studio work.
Ultimately, the program is more than just technical training; it is a platform for students to explore their identities, express their unique visions and communicate their interpretations of the world through the powerful medium of art.
Newhaven College welcomes all interested future students and their families to join a College Tour. Go to the College website www.newhavencol.vic.edu.au to book a tour.
