A local service station is investigating the source of an alleged water leak into fuel.

Last week social media lit up after several drivers reported car failure after fuelling their vehicles at Mobil Cowes.

Skye posted that she put fuel in her car from the service station and "I got just down the road before my car conked out".

"I had to get a mechanic to come down and look at my car we then discovered that the fuel was watered down," she said.

"I'm now without a car; have to get it towed to my mechanic and then drained."
Local resident Jo said her car also had to be drained after fuelling up at the same station.

"Conked out 1.3kms away from the servo. I called and told them to test the fuel earlier. I've tried to call back since then to find out the results and the phone is switched off," Jo said.

The manager of the Mobil Cowes said the reports were made after last week's heavy rain, but did not impact all customers.

"We test daily but that day because of the rain we were not able to test," the manager told the Advertiser.

"We did receive a complaint and we are investigating."

A spokesperson for ExxonMobil said Mobil does not own or operate any service stations in Australia.
