The Polar Bears are back

Those intrepid islanders who like to celebrate the first day of spring with a plunge in the ocean are back in action on Thursday, September 1.

The Polar Bear swim has been running since 2008. During Covid, lockdowns and social distancing turned it into an online video affair – with everyone taking the plunge in their own time and sharing videos.

This year, Polar Bear leader Jenny is hoping lots of people will join in the fun at the Cowes Foreshore at 5pm.

There’s no official enrolments or formalities and you don’t need experienced or advanced swimming skills to join in. It’s not a fundraising event and is open to anyone willing to brave the icy waters.

There are no age restrictions and there are usually plenty of kids willing to take the plunge.

However, there are three firm rules in place for the fun event: No wetsuits, no nudity and you must put your head under the water.
