The race to 80%
As of August 27, 68 per cent of the eligible population in Bass Coast had received their first dose.
Having decided that vaccination is most definitely a race, the challenge now is to hit the magical 80 per cent vaccination level, so restrictions can ease.
If Bass Coast Shire Council wants to achieve its aim to be the first Victorian shire to hit 80 per cent, we will need to get a wriggle on.
As of August 27 (the latest figures released by the Federal Government), 68 per cent of the eligible population in Bass Coast had received their first dose, while 40.9 per cent were fully vaccinated.
However over in Queenscliff, they’ve already reached 64 per cent fully vaccinated, well clear of nearest rivals Buloke on 48.4 and Surf Coast on 48.3 per cent. To be fair, both Queenscliff and Buloke have tiny populations (2,610 and 5,123), so Surf Coast is a fairer comparison.
Even closer to home, Bass Coast has a race on its hands.
East Gippsland is currently in front, with 43 per cent of the population fully vaccinated, followed by Bass Coast (40.9), Wellington (39.2), South Gippsland (37.2), Baw Baw (34.3) and Latrobe (32.7).
However, in further proof that we really are not the new Byron, our vaccination rates are well clear of Byron Bay, which currently only has 25.5 per cent of the population fully vaccinated.
