The contrast between the response to the Stage 3 lockdowns announced in March last year, and the latest lockdown could not be starker.

It might have been something to do with the weather or the lack of surf, or perhaps now Victorians are better at locking down, more resigned to the boom-and-bust cycle of living in a pandemic.

Back in March 2020, despite clear instructions for people to stay home – and for Melburnians not to visit regional areas – Bass Coast was flooded with visitors.

However last Friday morning (July 16), it was a completely different story.

A lone car sat in the carpark and the beach was empty.
