“It is time now, at a minute to midnight, for us all to take seriously the message from our young people, that urgent action on climate change is needed,” Mary Whelan, Chair of Totally Renewable Phillip Island (TRPI) said.
“We support our young people who are part of the world-wide action by school students taking their message for strong action on climate change out of the classroom and into the streets.
“Their message is clear.”
- Net zero emissions by 2030 – no new coal, oil or gas projects, including the Adani mine;
- 100 per cent renewable energy generation by 2030 and;
- Fund a just transition and job creation for all fossil-fuel workers and their communities.
“If one doctor tells us we are ill and need to change our ways, let alone dozens of experts repeat the same diagnosis, do we usually ignore them?
“It is time to accept the message of climate scientists, environmentalists and economists. Our young people believe them, so should we.”
TRPI was formed at a Community Energy public forum in June 2018. The 150 plus attendees unanimously agreed to form Totally Renewable Phillip Island (TRPI) with a vision of zero emissions by 2030.
“TRPI is a movement of like-minded individuals and organisations committed to reduce carbon emissions and transition Phillip Island to Renewable Energy by 2030,” said Mary.
The 15 partner organisations comprise community groups, local business, educational institutions and government authorities. Each partner is an independent entity, linked to others through TRPI, all with their strong commitment to meaningful action on climate change.
“TRPI congratulates the Newhaven College students who organised the school strike, and those who came with their families and their banners, calling for action to give them a sustainable future,” Mary said.
“Newhaven College has joined TRPI as a partner organisation, working for a sustainable future for their community.”
