Wildlife Coast Cruises (WCC) is aware of a reported marine hazard off the coast between Cape Schanck and Cape Liptrap, as identified in a recent Notice to Mariners issued by Safe Transport Victoria.

The hazard involves a partially submerged drifting trawl net, which poses a potential risk to both vessel safety and marine wildlife, including seals, dolphins, and seabirds in the region.

"Due to the potential environmental impact, we have formally lodged this as a marine safety concern with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and we are seeking clarity on any planned retrieval efforts with authorities," a spokesperson for WCC said.

"We have made multiple attempts over the last week to contact Safe Transport Victoria who issued the alert via both email and phone to better understand the response being undertaken and are awaiting further information.

"Ghost gear like this can have serious and ongoing impacts on marine life and we are particularly concerned about the risk of entanglement for wildlife in this region and the need for timely action."

Wildlife Coast Cruises is encouraging all vessel operators in the area to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the drifting net to Marine Radio Victoria.

"We welcome collaboration with relevant authorities and stakeholders to support monitoring efforts and minimise environmental impact where possible."
For more information and the alert go to the Safe Transport Victoria website.
