Cowes Front Beaches

Cowes is home to some of the only north-facing beaches in Victoria, making it a unique and sought-after spot for safe swimming.

Nestled along the shores of Western Port Bay, the gently sloping sandy Cowes front beaches are shielded from prevailing winds and swells, creating calm waters ideal for families and beachgoers of all ages. At high tide, the beach is perfect for a refreshing dip, while at low tide tidal flats emerge, ready for curious explorers.

The Cowes jetty along the front beach is also a favorite with anglers and is the boarding point for a passenger ferry across to French Island and Stony Point; as well as day tours around the island on Wildlife Coast Ferries.

What to Expect at Cowes Main Beach

• Swimming, paddleboarding, sailing, jet skiing, fishing, and casual games on the sand

• Facilities include public toilets (with accessible amenities), changing rooms, and cold outdoor showers

• A paved car park with accessible parking bays along the Cowes Esplanade, provides access to these beaches

• Food and drink options are plentiful, with cafés and takeaway shops nearby. Picnic facilities are located at both Erehwon Point Park and Mussel Rocks.

• Beach access is via stairs, which may limit wheelchair accessibility

• A beach front walk abutting the Cowes front beaches and affording beautiful bay views extends from the Cowes Yacht Club (west of the Jetty)  on to Lovers Walk, (east of the jetty) extending along Stradbroke Avenue and ending at Coghlan Road.

Staying Safe

• The stretch of beach between Cowes Jetty and Mussel Rocks is patrolled daily from Boxing Day through to late January by lifesavers from the Woolamai Surf Life Saving Club

Lifesavers are only on duty when the red and yellow flags are displayed.

Remember to always swim between the flags.
