Smiths Beach: Family Fun Meets Surf Culture

Tucked along Phillip Island’s south-west coast, Smiths Beach spans one scenic kilometre and is a go-to spot for families and water lovers alike.

Known for its consistent, surfable waves, the beach caters to all skill levels—whether you're just starting out on a board or you’ve been riding waves for years.

It’s also a popular choice for bodyboarding, stand-up paddleboarding, and confident swimmers. At low tide, the beach reveals a wonderland of rock pools at both ends—some large enough to explore with a snorkel.

What You Can Do:

• Activities: Ideal for surfing, swimming, paddleboarding, bodyboarding, snorkelling, fishing, rock pool adventures, beach walks, and games on the sand.

• Amenities: Includes public restrooms with an accessible cubicle, changing areas, and outdoor cold-water showers.

• Parking: A sealed car park is available, complete with accessible parking bays for added convenience.

• Food & Drink: A nearby general store serves up hot meals, snacks, coffee, and refreshments.

• Gear & Lessons: Surfboards, wetsuits, and SUPs can be hired from the local surf shop, which also offers lessons for those keen to learn.

• Access: You can reach the beach via steps or a ramp. A wheelchair-friendly path leads straight from the car park onto the sand.

Staying Safe:

• Water Conditions: Be aware that rips and strong currents can occur—always assess the water carefully before entering.

• Lifesaving Services: The beach is patrolled by Woolamai Surf Lifesaving Club members between 27 December and 25 January each year.

• Swimming Guidelines: Enter the water only when red and yellow flags are flying, and always stay between them.

• Patrol Information: For current patrol details, visit the Beach Patrol Calendar.

• Fishing Safety: Rock fishers should take extra caution. Safety brochures are available in several languages.

• Multilingual Resources: Beach and rip current safety information is provided in multiple languages to help keep everyone informed.
