Local exhibition tours Gippsland

Several Phillip Island artists are part of the inaugural Artists of Gippsland touring exhibition.

The exhibition runs at ArtSpace Wonthaggi from November 3 - 28, before moving to Coal Creek Art Space (December 10 - January 31) and Meeniyan Art Gallery (February 3 - 28).

A special opening celebration - open to the public - will be held at ArtSpace on November 8, from 1pm to 3pm.

Artists of Gippsland is a landmark exhibition celebrating the depth and diversity of contemporary art being made right across the Gippsland region.

The exhibition brings together 33 selected artists from Bass Coast, South Gippsland, Baw Baw, Latrobe City, Wellington and East Gippsland shires.

More than 100 applications were received from artists living across all six Gippsland shires, representing over 275 artworks submitted for consideration.

The selected works span the full breadth of contemporary practice - sculpture, installation, painting, printmaking, photography, mixed media and works on paper - and include nationally established artists alongside those at mid-career and emerging stages of their practice.

"Artists of Gippsland is such a unique opportunity to lace together the artists community across the vastness of Gippsland and provide a rare opportunity to come together and exhibit," said Meg Viney, ArtSpace Wonthaggi Committee
Meg said the exhibition reflects the best of current contemporary practice across the region - "bold, considered, and unmistakably of this place".

Selected works demonstrate the extraordinary range of material and conceptual approaches being pursued by Gippsland artists today, from intimate works on paper to large-scale sculptural installations.

Cowes artist Phillip Sayers is one of the 33 featured artists in the exhibition.
"I am absolutely thrilled to have been selected and very much looking forward to being part of the tour," he said.

Coal Creek Art Space, Korumburra: December 10 - January 31. Opening event, Thursday December 10, 6pm - 8pm
Meeniyan Art Gallery: February 3 - 28. Opening: Sunday February 7, 2pm.
