In 1985 Queen’s ship, Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia, sailed through Western Port bay, accompanied by a Navy frigate, although the Queen was not on board at the time.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II last Friday, a local reader contacted the Advertiser saying she recalled the day in 1985 the Queen’s ship, Her Majesty's Yacht Britannia, sailed through Western Port bay, accompanied by a Navy frigate.

Residents along the whole of the northern beaches braved a cold day to see the ship sail past, she said. Unfortunately, the Queen was not on board at the time.

Reader Heather recalled in 1954 being a seven-year-old, “lining the street in Sale outside the school, waving our flags, as her motorcade travelled from the RAAF air base to the railway station to travel into Melbourne”.

Prince Philip visited Phillip Island in 1973, with members of the Conservation Society meeting him on the Cowes jetty.

Former students in attendance at the Ventnor Primary School 100 year anniversary celebrations recalled their excitement back in 1954 at being driven across to Leongatha where they joined students from across Gippsland to wave flags that they had been given, as the Queen and Prince Phillip drove by.
