Since 2016, a state government mandated rate cap has kept rate rises below three per cent – but that is all set to change. On December 29, the government announced a new rate cap of 3.5 per cent for all councils for the 2023/24 financial year, saying it would protect Victorians from uncontrolled rate hikes while ensuring local governments remain financially sustainable.
