Start at the Festival Experience Hub
The best place to begin your whale-filled weekend is the Festival Experience Hub at Berninneit Cultural Centre and the Little Whale Explorers kids’ activities marquee.
Your Festival Experience Pass unlocks access to four spaces designed to entertain, educate and inspire:
*Festival Experience Hub and Treasure Map Adventure
Collect your treasure map and set off on an interactive scavenger hunt through a series of marine-themed art installations created by acclaimed artist Zev Landes.
Along the way, families can meet exhibitors, explore hands-on conservation displays and discover facts about the whales, dolphins and marine life that call local waters home.
*Immersive Room
Cruise along the Phillip Island coastline and come face-to-face with the majestic killer whales that visit us.
*Theatre Program
The Berninneit Theatre will host a diverse program of family-friendly presentations, films and expert talks throughout the weekend.
Learn about the marine creatures of Phillip Island, discover the wonders of Western Port Bay and the Western Port Biosphere, hear from scientists and storytellers, and enjoy screenings of popular ABC Kids programs and Ocean with David Attenbourough on the big screen.
*Little Whale Explorers Marquee
Located in St Philip's Church grounds, the Little Whale Explorers marquee is designed for younger visitors.
Packed with whale-themed arts and crafts, colouring activities, and creative challenges, it's the place for little hands and curious minds to explore and create.
Meet real whale researchers
Head to the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club to meet local researchers from the Dolphin Research Institute and Two Bays Whale Project.
Families can join guided whale-spotting sessions, learn how scientists study whales and dolphins, and get hands-on with real whale bones, ocean sounds and interactive games.
It's an experience that brings marine science to life.
Older children and teenagers interested in science can also learn about pathways into marine conservation and research careers. (Bookings required for all sessions)
Get creative
The festival offers plenty of opportunities to unleash creativity.
Join the team from Clay & Co for family-friendly art workshops and pop-up creative sessions throughout the weekend.
Kids can also design their own wooden whale artwork, participate in ocean-inspired craft activities and enjoy free creative sessions at the Phillip Island Library.
Spot a whale in the wild
No family visit would be complete without heading out to look for the festival's star attractions.
Follow the Phillip Island and Bass Coast Whale Discovery Trail to some of the region's best coastal lookouts, including Cape Woolamai, Pyramid Rock and The Nobbies.
Bring binoculars and keep watch for the tell-tale blow of a humpback or southern right whale migrating along the coast.
For families wanting an even closer encounter, Wildlife Coast Cruises offers unforgettable whale-watching experiences on the water.
Make memories this winter
The Island Whale Festival is more than just a weekend event — it's an opportunity to connect with nature, learn something new and create family memories.
With affordable tickets, free activities and experiences for all ages, it's one of Phillip Island's most exciting school holiday adventures.
