Community groups from across Bass Coast will come together under one roof to showcase their work and attract locals who want to make a difference through volunteering.
The Bass Coast Volunteer Expo will run from 9.30am to 12 noon on Wednesday May 20, at Berninneit, 91 - 97 Thompson Ave, Cowes.
Held in celebration of National Volunteer Week - "your year to volunteer" - the expo will highlight the range of volunteer opportunities across Bass Coast and the vital role thousands of locals play in strengthening the community by contributing their time and talents.
More than 20 community groups will attend including the Phillip Island and District Historical Society, South Coast FM, Rhyll Tennis Club, Friends of Churchill Island Society and Ageing with Grace.
Joy Martin, from Ageing with Grace, which is funded by the Federal Government to help the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme, said the organisation aimed to combat social isolation and loneliness among older people.
"Loneliness can be incredibly debilitating in our community," Joy said.
"As we age, it often becomes harder to stay connected and to form new friendships.
"At Ageing with Grace, we match volunteers with older people for regular visits, whether in their home or an aged care residence, helping to build meaningful connections and a sense of belonging."
Joy said the expo was an opportunity for "us to promote what we do to potential volunteers as well as families and people who may need a visit".
Phillip Island Community and Learning Centre (PICAL) manager David Rooks oversees the volunteer-led neighbourhood house and said the expo was valuable for anyone who has considered volunteering.
"This is a great opportunity for locals interested in volunteering to explore and connect with groups that match their interests," David said.
"Potential volunteers will learn about the benefits of giving back and can connect directly with local community groups."
The PICAL table will host the Bass Coast Winter Shelter.
"If any community groups have missed out or don't have capacity to be there on the day, we are happy to represent you," David said.
"Just contact me at PICAL and drop-off your brochure.
"Bass Coast already has higher than average volunteer commitment and this expo is designed to take that to the next level. So, come along and have fun. It will be a great day."
The Bass Coast Volunteer Expo is free and open to everyone.
