Newhaven college year 10 students recently put learning into action during the annual Surf Safety and Recreation Camp at Cape Woolamai.

Held over two days, the camp served as the ultimate practical assessment for the elective subject, which focuses on surfing skills, ocean awareness, safety, surf judging and surfboard shaping.

The camp challenged students to put a semester of learning into practice, transforming classroom knowledge into real-world lifesaving skills.

Day one focused on the rigorous requirements of the Surf Life Saving Bronze Medallion, with students undertaking assessments in dynamic water rescues, communication, beach management and first aid.

The students stayed overnight at the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club (WBSLSC) before kicking off day two with a sunrise walk to the Pinnacles.

The second day shifted focus to the Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ART) award, equipping students with skills in advanced oxygen therapy, high-quality resuscitation, and complex bleeding management.

The culmination of the camp was a surprise, high-pressure car crash simulation designed to test students' skills in a realistic emergency scenario.

Local makeup artist Lysa created realistic special effects makeup for the 'accident' victims, who were portrayed by local volunteers as part of the final assessment.
