THE Phillip Island Leisure Centre will launch a
major innovation with the Virtual Group Fitness
classes starting on Wednesday, December 20.
The move by YMCA management will see an
increase in class variety and availability to mem-
bers and guests of the popular recreation facility
in Church Street.
Virtual Group Fitness is an online or video
based system that provides Les Mills group fit-
ness content to a facility via a large projection and
sound system. The YMCA researched and adopted
virtual technology over three years ago and Phillip
Island Leisure Centre is the latest centre to roll the
new technology out.
Bass Coast YMCA Area Manager Rebecca Wil-
son said the expansion of the new technology in
to group fitness classes was the result of extensive
“The YMCA is committed to engaging all com-
munity segments across the Bass Coast and this
initiative has been driven by research within the
local community. We are offering the newest and
most innovative experience to all our members
and guests,” she said.
“We are excited to be offering additional classes
that have not been seen at the YMCA and bringing
back a couple of class options from the past”.
Virtual Group Fitness has emerged to become
one of the most sought after products within the
industry and is being implemented worldwide.
Ms Wilson said Virtual Group Fitness will be in-
stalled in the former Spin room/Squash court and
will provide the centre with the ability to increase
utilisation of this space by offering classes to tar-
geted groups and attracting new participants to
group training who would not normally join group
“It is important to note, with the exception of
changes in the spin programming, that no live
classes will be removed from our timetable,
however there will be an increase in classes at
times that are suitable to all,” she said. “We’ve
responded to the demands of busy people by
making it easier to exercise and stay fit and

10 Boys middle distance event on Saturday.
THE final day of 2017 saw the cloud clearing
for brilliant race conditions at the annual Bass
Coast Dune2Dune triathlon.
Over 80 participants assembled for the start
of the swim at the Cape Paterson Bay beach
and there were two race distances, a short
course comprising a 600m swim, 20km bike
and 3.6km run, and long course of 1200m
swim, 40km bike and 9.6km run.
The race was delayed for about 15 minutes
due to one of the buoys anchor becoming stuck
on a reef while trying to reposition and there
was a sense of concern for some competitors
before braving big swell and lots of chop from
the outflowing tide.
The end of the swim saw lots of kelp and
seaweed to navigate through; a challenging first

leg was the same as in previous years.

course with double that number starting the
