Newhaven College students from Year 2 to Year 12 took centre stage this month, delivering a spectacular evening of music to a capacity audience at Wonthaggi Union Theatre as part of the College's annual Spring Concert.
Newhaven College students from Year 2 to Year 12 took centre stage this month, delivering a spectacular evening of music to a capacity audience at Wonthaggi Union Theatre as part of the College's annual Spring Concert.
The concert showcased the breadth and diversity of Newhaven College's music program, with performances spanning Taiko drumming, choirs, strings, guitar ensembles, big band and concert bands.
The evening was hosted by the College's 2026 music captains Aoife O'Connell, Holly Martelli and Michael Christofi.
The program featured performances from students across all year levels. The Junior School Choir delighted audiences with a collection of Little Red Riding Hood-themed songs and expressive choreography, while the senior vocal ensemble delivered a haunting rendition of the traditional Scottish folk song Skye Boat Song.
Newhaven's junior and senior guitar ensembles demonstrated impressive musicianship and developing technical skills, before the concert moved into an energetic second half featuring the College's Concert Bands and Big Band.
The Senior Concert Band, which delivered a polished performance of Michael Sweeney's Medley from Back to the Future.
The evening concluded with a performance from the College's Music Camp Choir, bringing together students and staff for a spirited rendition of Holy Grail, by Australian band Hunters & Collectors.
Newhaven College Director of Music, Matthew Goss, said he was immensely proud of the students and staff involved in the concert.
"Music thrives at Newhaven College because of the support of our wider community. My particular thanks go to Mr Tony Corr, the College Executive and the College Board for their continued commitment to the music department and to the opportunities we are able to offer our students."
Mr Goss also acknowledged the dedication of the College's music staff and instrumental tutors.
"I am deeply grateful to our dedicated team of music staff and instrumental tutors. Whether teaching individual lessons, directing ensembles, preparing students for performance, or offering a quiet word of encouragement to a nervous musician before they step on stage, their expertise, energy and care are at the heart of everything we achieve."
The College's Performing Arts Wing is used daily by students from Prep to Year 12 for individual music lessons, rehearsals, choirs and ensemble programs.
A highlight of the College's annual music calendar is the music camp, which brings students together at Urban Camp in Melbourne to rehearse intensively, develop their ensembles and build friendships, confidence and connections across year levels.
For the students who performed at this year's spring concert, the event was a celebration not only of their musical achievements, but also of the dedication, teamwork and passion that have shaped their musical journey throughout the year.
