Private Life on screen at Berninneit

The Phillip Island Movie Club (PIMC) September film is A Private Life, screening at Berninneit on Wednesday September 30 at 7.30pm.

In this 2026 film, Jodie Foster stars as Lilian Steiner, an American psychoanalyst who has built a successful life in Paris.

When one of her patients, Paula, is found dead in what appears to be suicide, Lilian becomes convinced that something is not quite right.

Unable to let the matter go, she begins investigating for herself, drawing her ex-husband Gabriel into the increasingly strange mystery.

What begins as a murder investigation gradually becomes something much more psychological and unpredictable.

Lilian's professional world of psychoanalysis, hypnosis and the workings of the mind starts to blur with her own personal life, as she questions what she believes - and how well she really understands the people around her.

There are twists, dark humour and moments of genuine unease, with the film moving between psychological drama, mystery and film noir.

"At its centre is Foster, giving a wonderfully restrained but surprisingly playful performance," said a PIMC spokesperson.

"One of the film's biggest talking points is that she delivers almost the entire performance in French.

"Foster has spoken French since childhood, but says she becomes a different person when speaking it - her voice is higher and she feels less confident and more vulnerable.

She even spent a month in France before filming, avoiding English as much as possible to immerse herself in the language.

"And listen out for the moments when Lilian swears: those are in English - a small but amusing reminder that beneath her thoroughly French-speaking exterior, she is still very much an American."

The bar at Berninneit will be open at 7pm for drinks and snacks. Please note the film begins at 7.30pm sharp.
