Boardriders heading north
2 min read

Phillip Island Boardriders Club is one of 22 clubs competing in this year’s Australian Boardriders Battle Grand Final on February 5 and 6.

The competition will be held at Newcastle Main beach, with Surfing Australia promising “two days of epic surfing”.

The Phillip Island team will be joined by the Torquay Boardriders, representing Victoria in the event.

The Phillip Island Boardriders Club described the grand final as “one of the best events a club can compete in”.

“Phillip Island Boardriders Club (PIBC) have been lucky to surf in a handful of finals over the years alongside surfers they have grown up with and it always is such an amazing event,” said PIBC club captain, Harry de Roth.

This year, the team will consist of Carl Wright, Ash Easton, Sage Goldsbury, Blake Green and Harry de Roth.

“Team PIBC is extremely excited and grateful to get back to Newcastle this year especially coming out of a turbulent past 18 months due to Covid restrictions and lockdowns. This event is something the club really strives to qualify for and compete in each year and is thrilled to be part of it.”

The 2021/22 Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle has been bigger and better than ever since launching into its ninth season on the Gold Coast in August last year.

In what has become world-renowned as the biggest and best club surfing series on the planet, the nine-leg Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle Series travels to all corners of the country with events at epic locations like Newcastle for the National Final.

This year, 18 of the best clubs across Australia have qualified and will be competing for first place, alongside five wildcard entries.

What is always guaranteed is incredible surfing and a great atmosphere at the event.

“It is a great opportunity for the club to compete against the best surfers in Australia and show off what amazing talent we have on Phillip Island,” Harry de Roth said.

“The team is extremely focussed on trying to bring home a big result this year. All team members have been training hard and surfing really well. The spirit and positivity in the club and during training sessions has been great to see. Surfing can be seen as such an individual sport so competing as a team is so much fun and we're so lucky that everyone is such good friends at PIBC.

“I think it makes a huge difference if we can keep focussed but have fun and all get along at the same time.”
